Wyoming County Historian Cindy Amrhein holds “A History of Wyoming County N.Y.” The book is back in print for the first time in 30 years.

WARSAW — As resources go, “History of Wyoming County, N.Y.” has long been valued by historians and genealogists.

The book was written in 1880 and gives a detailed account of the county’s founding — the families, the businesses and the public figures who held sway in its earliest days. But it was out of print for decades and good copies can be hard to find.

A new edition of the book has been published by the State University of New York Press. It features an introduction by County Historian Cynthia Amrhein and has been updated to eliminate typos and similar errors.

“To get it in hard copy was nearly impossible as the last printing when our office did it in 1990 was through Heart of the Lake Publishing which is now out of business,” Amrhein said. “An original is usually a couple hundred dollars in online auctions. I thought a reprint was a great idea.”

Amrhein was approached by the State University of New York about a year ago regarding the book.

The Wyoming County Historian’s Office had last published “History of Wyoming County, N.Y.” in 1990 as a private pressing, she said. Although copies could be found for sale or as electronic files on the internet, they were often missing pages, maps, and other important details.

The artwork in the electronic copies also wasn’t as crisp or detailed as what people would see in the originals.

The book’s subject matter includes chapters on the Iroquois nations, Mary Jemison, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and similar details of Wyoming County’s history. Other chapters detail people, businesses and churches at the time.

Amrhein’s introductions include a description of how and why the county was formed: In 1841, traveling even short distances was time-intensive, and a trip to Batavia for government or legal matters was exceptionally challenging for a farming community. A new county with its seat in a place such as Warsaw was a practical solution. The publishing process took about a year, Amrhein said. Beyond writing the introduction, she assisted with copy editing and fact checking the original material, usually basing it on the original sources.

“Also, there was one mistake on page 80 of the original that has been perpetuated through the decades and it was caused by misplaced punctuation,” she said. “What it did was created two different Civil War soldiers that did not exist and in essence eliminated the one that did. I stressed the correction of that not to be overlooked.”

So by correcting the error, Armhein restored Alton P. Beardsley and Oscar Ayres, both of Sheldon, to the record.

The art has also been restored to its original crispness.

“The book is not just for genealogists,” Amrhein said. “It can be a valuable tool for anyone doing county research on its beginnings. The book contains the history of the churches, schools, cemeteries, businesses in the towns, and their prominent founders and the names of many of the Civil War soldiers.

Some copies will be available starting July 1 at the County Historian’s office on 26 Linwood Avenue in Warsaw. It can also be purchased at https://sunypress.edu/Books/H/History-of-Wyoming-County-N.Y

A lower-priced, softcover edition will become available in about six months.
