Pamplin Media Group - CROOK COUNTY LIBRARY: Friends of the Library deserve our gratitude

Take a moment to bring up the memory of the theme song to Golden Girls: "Thank you for being a friend / traveled down a road and back again / your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant." I get this melody in my head nearly every time I think of our wonderful Friends of the Library.

The Friends of the Crook County Library was founded in 1997 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit membership corporation dedicated to enhancing the programs, services and materials of the Crook County Library. The Friends do so through public awareness, sponsorship of cultural programs and private funding. The Friends have supported a variety of initiatives at the library, including the recent upgrades to our teen and children's spaces. Thanks to the Friends, we have a well-supported summer reading program for teens and adults, because why should kids get all the fun? If you enjoyed a Kona Ice treat, free book or attended one of our incredibly popular all-ages programs this summer, thank a Friend! A D V E R T I S I N G | Continue reading below

Friends of the Library groups across the country get their own special celebration this month, with Oct. 16-22 being National Friends of Libraries Week. Here are a few ways you can join in on the fun:

Attend the Oct. 15 Friends Book Sale. This month, the Friends are holding one of their highly anticipated blowout sales, where for the low entry price of $5 per adult (youth enter free of charge), you can take home as many books as you can pack out. You'll find books for all ages as well as additional items like DVDs. The fun starts at 9 a.m.; don't be surprised to find a line forming.

This is a great time to become a member of the Friends. Annual membership dues start at $5 for seniors and students, with additional membership rates available based on your ability to give. Dues strengthen and expand library services as a supplement to county funding, allowing for special services and programs that might not otherwise be possible.

The library is grateful to the Friends for all the work they do accepting book donations from the community; while the library itself doesn't normally accept donations, the Friends take care of a frequently overflowing donation bin and work with individuals who have large collections to offer. These materials are sorted and stored for future book sales, the proceeds of which funnel back to supporting library services.

Do you have a child under 5 in your life? Did you know they can receive a free book in the mail each month thanks to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program? The Friends of the Crook County Library provided seed money to get the Imagination Library started in Crook County. For more information, visit the library or sign up at https://imaginationlibrary.com/usa/affiliate/ORCROOK/.

"My hat is off / won't you stand up and take a bow," continues the song. As library director, I give a standing ovation to the Friends of the Crook County Library, and I hope you'll thank a Friend as well!
